Synopsis

Currently, Dr. Gans is the Executive Director of Healthcare Leadership. He is also a Professor of Healthcare and Pharmaceutical Business in the Mayes College of Healthcare Business and Policy, as well as a Professor of Pharmacy in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmacy Administration.

Dr. Gans earned his Doctor of Pharmacy and Science from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Prior to this, he completed a residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He also earned his Bachelor of Science from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.

Dr. Gans was most recently the Executive Vice President and Executive Officer of the American Pharmacist Association in Washington, DC. While in this position, the Association's name was changed from "American Pharmaceutical Association" to "American Pharmacist Association." Other changes occured during that time as well- membership doubled, revenues increased six-fold, and the APhA's iconic headquarters building on the National Mall in Washington DC expanded leasing space seven-fold and increased value to $200 million. A significant accomplishment of APhA was supporting the idea that the Doctor of Pharmacy degree should become the standard education to qualify for license to practice in the United States. In addition, APhA completed the research which led to the expansion of Pharmacy Practice into medication therapy management service to improve chronic disease care. APhA eventually partnered with several organizations to form the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, which has certified over 350,000 technicians in the US.

Dr. Gans was the Dean of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science from 1988 until 1989. Prior to this, he was the Chair of the Department of Pharmacy from 1978 until 1988. Dr. Gans was also the Managing Director of Pharmservices, a company which primarily offered consulting activities to nursing homes, from 1974 until 1985.
